A speculative archival fiction by Mariah Green.
Excerpt: All doors to the van were wide open. Hands quickly shoved in loosely folded towls, stray chip bags and one recently drained cooler. Like the towls we folded into our usual seats- Mom in the front passenger, Dad our pilot home, while Alazia and Amari, who are older and longer legged, sat in the middle. Beyond their taller shoulders, I blended in the backseat bittersweetly ready to go home. Sand took turns between my toes and my sandels. other than the front window, the back window was the second biggest window and screened like a real life movie. Inside, strings pulsed a sombre tune played back over and over. Grieving time spent with family. Holding onto all the gritting composite of sand left on its way home with us. Leaving like Perris now means that we will be greeted with sundown in Hemet.
Quiet Quail Books Employee note: Very cool, I may be mistaken but I think somebody rhizo-printed and then bound the whole thing by hand, you should buy this book… its wicked.
